Thanks to the massive marketing effort from Blizzard, fans around the world would have found out about the upcoming major update for Hearthstone, featuring the huge ‘Whispers of the Old Gods’ expansion. Just because it can, Hearthstone is giving away 13 booster packs from the new series for free.
Before going into the mechanics of getting those freebie boosters, let’s take a look at the two big deals that Blizzard has set up for Hearthstone that is set to take off today.
First up – the play-style for Hearthstone has been completely revamped. Instead of the usual format, there are now two modes to choose from: Standard and Wild. As shared in an early February 2016 posting in the Hearthstone webportal, both formats are created to add in a dash of excitement to the gameplay.
With Standard, Hearthstone players can only build their deck solely from a pool of cards that had been released in the current and previous calendar year, along with a core foundation of the Basic and Classic card sets. Do not be surprised that the Basic and Classic sets will receive long-term adjustments as, Blizzard claims, that is meant to make the game more balanced. Also, take note that the Standard mode will cycle out older sets and make them inaccessible. This ensures everyone will be able to duke it out on a level playing field and need not pick up older cards to stay competitive. This mode is only available for Friendly Challenges, Ranked, and Casual play and will not affect Arena, Solo play, or Adventures.
As for Wild, it is the gameplay everyone has started and grown with Hearthstone since it launched. Players will be able to finish quests, earn gold, rank up on the ladder, get card backs, earn Legend rank, and use all the cards they’ve already collected to build a Wild deck, just like before.
Both modes will not be matched up against each other as there is no sense in doing so. Thusly, even in Ranked, there will be two separate rank ladders for each format.
Not all is great with the big change in playstyle as the first two extended lores for Hearthstone – the Curse of Naxxramas Adventure and Goblins VS Gnomes Expansion – have been cycled out, as per the Standard Format ruling. That means not being able to purchase them anymore from the Shop for Standard mode. Interestingly, Wild allows players to engage the cards they have collected from those two sets and even craft them, even the ones that cannot be crafted previously, to fill up their collection.
Part of the major update will also see the coming of a yearly calendar. Starting from April 2016, a charted timeline will kick off with the Year of the Kraken. This also signifies the coming of the new Hearthstone expansion: Whispers of the Old Gods. That is the second big announcement for this popular digital card game.
This new set brings out the concept of corruption, corrupted beings, and overpowered techniques that would blow out the mana pool. Those keen to see the cards can go here is the entire card-set for easy review.
Players who sign-in from today onwards will receive three free packs from the new expansion and will, instantly, gain their first Legendary – C’Thun. The other 10 free packs can be earned through one-time Quests: win the first Standard Mode games for five and then win another seven on the same format to earn the last five.
While these huge change can be seen as a big step up for Hearthstone, there will definitely be more minor patches in the coming weeks to balance out the new expansion and work out any known bugs. Of course, there should be no cause for concern, so do jump right in and start earning those freebie boosters as soon as possible.
