Mention videogame shops and GameStop would be one of the first things that come to mind. Such easy recognition will now include a new territory that the US-based game retailer moved into: videogame publishing. This is not some on-a-whim thing as some big names have already signed up.

Called the GameTrust, this new videogame publisher is already working with Insomniac Games, Ready At Dawn Studios, FrozenByte, and Tequila Works for new launch efforts. This includes the upcoming adventure game that Insomniac Games, best known for Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive, is working on, entitled Song of the Deep.

According to Polygon, this is just a first of many moves that GameStop has in mind for this new venture, something the videogame retail franchise is calling as a non-traditional game publishing. One key aspect will be how GameTrust will work directly with indie developers and leverage on the massive GameStop retail chain to help the general public to discover new games.

The main goal of establishing such a unique publishing platform is to revolutionise both the development and distribution process for the indie scene.

“We want to create a new way for independent developers to introduce their own IP to a broad gaming audience. At the same time, we also want gamers, [of all ages], to discover and enjoy exclusive new video game experiences,” the company said in a press statement.

Just so it is properly made known, GameStop is very clear on what GameTrust will not do. “It will not be part of the creative game-making process. Instead, we are investing in exclusive real estates within our online and physical stores to offer gamers access to new games available across multiple platforms. This will, of course, include digital, physical, console, PC and VR platforms,” GameStop noted.

Beyond the four it has sign on, GameStop confirmed that it will announce the other new developers it is working with via GameTrust and will soon reveal the videogames it will be launching in the coming months.
